Barry Cornet

Los Angeles, Calif. - Barry Cornet, 63, of Los Angeles, Calif, died Friday, December 5, after a brief illness.

Mr. Cornet was born October 11, 1945, in New York, son of the late William and Florence (Winkel) Cornet. A graduate of the Ethical Culture School, the High School of the Performing Arts, and Carnegie Mellon University, he was a writer, host, and producer for radio and television.

Later in life, he began teaching English as a Second Language in the Los Angeles Public School System, specializing in basic literacy. He was a volunteer literacy teacher with the New York Public Library and then the Los Angeles Public Library literacy programs for many years before taking his unique teaching style and system to the public schools.

His vision, warmth, and wit will be missed by all who knew him.

He leaves his brother, Ken Cornet and his spouse, Joe Mustich, of Washington CT, and many friends, family and students. He was divorced from his wife, Gwyn Gillis.

Memorial services will take place in January in Los Angeles and New York.

    I worked with Barry and was a neighbor of his in Columbus, Ohio back in the early '80s. For whatever reason, I decided to google him today and was sorry to find the news in this post. And I see that Barry left us almost three years ago to the day.

    He was an intelligent and witty gentleman, and I'm sure the conversations in Heaven are all the richer with his presence.
